Finding Connections – Through Nature Art and Education
Fernheart Designs is the work of Kirsten Croswell, an independent digital artist and educator. All digital artwork has been created using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in Procreate.
I have always enjoyed writing and drawing, as well as tracking my learning about the world. During my nine years as a middle school math/science teacher, I was introduced to the world of sketchnoting by a colleague and immediately fell in love with the idea of using visuals to make learning more visible and build connections.
The confidence I gained in drawing as a sketchnoter eventually led me to reconnect with the practice of nature journaling. Connecting with this community has helped me realize the benefits of spending more time outside, being more present, and sharing what I am learning. It has also provided me the opportunity to participate in citizen science projects, like a local beaver survey, and lead nature journal workshops in partnership with local non-profits. I am also a Certified Interpretive Guide and currently pursuing certification as a Master Naturalist to lead additional programs.
On any given day, you can most often find me outside, exploring a local trail or wetland with my nature journal kit and camera in tow. On particularly rainy days, you may find me indoors enjoying a good book or adding colored pencil or watercolor to my nature journal pages.
